I am Samson (and I'm imPress'ed)

...and my nails are my hair. Lost? OK I am also lost without my nails. Every three weeks for as long as I can remember I have been preened to cuticle perfection and cannot stand being without them. (You know Samson was the guy who had all his strength in his hair and couldn't function without it, that's generally how I am without perfectly pointed pinkies.)

I've had gel nails for years, so recently decided to try other means and give my nails a bit of a break. This included a gel like paint which while giving the desired effect was thicker than my normal. After attending London Fashion Weekend one of the 'goodies' in the goodie bag were imPress press on manicure nails. As I was firmly in my cycle of going to the fab Vietnamese place on Kingsland Road (East London) I tossed them into a draw and basically forgot about them.
After having the thick gel paint I felt bad going back to my normal 'woman', so I elected to soak off the nails. This is the first time in I don't know how long I had seen my own. Not all that pretty. I also hate nail varnish. It chips, last about 5 minutes and takes forever to get on properly, not to mention off without staining your nails. It was then I remembered about the ones I had discarded months ago. It was a Monday (bank holiday) and I was going to a party followed by a fairly relaxed week outside of work, so I figured to hell with it I could do without being perfectly manicured for a week.
Day 1, before I was convinced
I hoped they would last the party at least then I could go back to my regular place in a few days time and admit defeat plumping for a brand new set. Then Tuesday came and they were firmly gleaming in place. Then Wednesday...Thursday....SUNDAY. They were amazing.
Hour 2, still not convinced, but pretty imPress'ed
There is nothing harmful to your nails here, even the gel I regularly use while better than acrylic is pretty harsh on your little hands. These feel like a really sensible alternative to give my nails a little R&R. I only intended to use one pack THEN go back to my normal...but I am curious as they come in a multitude of nice colours and pattens, I found myself buying another box. They cost upwards from £7.99 depending on the patten. For a week's worth of nails this is pretty good. More expensive than having them professionally done in East London (don't even start me on places like Nails Inc, they are ridiculously expensive and the Vietnamese/Chinese places do a much better job for a fraction of the cost.) This is only because you have to re-do them more frequently.

The upside? If you lose one, chances are there is another in the pack that can patch up that finger! Hurrah! The packs come with 24 nails in 12 sizes, definitely one size fits all in terms of a pack. The only problem is that the magic 'prep pad' that comes with must make your nails susceptible to the sticky adhesive on the back of the nail, as when I tried to stick one on it wasn't so firmly on as before. I haven't seen if you can buy the prep pads separately, but this would definitely be a good idea.
Different packaging to a few months ago (Above)

Choose your sizes
Start with the pinky, finish with thumbs
Ta-dah! Manicure in minutes
So I scoffed at the adverts...PAH as if Nicole Scherzinger has stick on nails...
I discarded them into a draw when they were free and now I've coughed up my own dough for them

imPress Nails are available in Boots in the UK, my local one which isn't huge had 12 colour varieties. Not too shabby. They don't seem to name the colours, but the free ones we re a dark maroony red, and I've gone for a brighter more corally red to top up.

Carrie Travels: Sorrento

What to do to escape the British weather? Dive down to Southern Italy. What about the hottest week in the UK this year? Oh OK I'll go then...

The main attraction for going to Italy aside from the sun? The food!! Some of my favourite foods come from here; pizza, pasta, ice cream, bread, MMM. MMM.

I took a million photos and also took day trips to the Amalfi Coast and Capri, which I will post about separately. First off, Sorrento is a hilly place. Seriously hilly, and there are no pavements to speak of in most places. Traffic is seriously all over the shop. Most of the time in transit is spent dodging scooters with anything up to three passengers and a dog on board. Looks like fun! Other than this the scenery is very picturesque...

Most drinks come with complimentary snacks
This band were great, trawling the streets all evening

One of the most famous restaurants in Sorrento is called O'Parrucchiano. There is practically a lemon grove inside. We had been recommended this restaurant by others who have travelled here. It was probably our ordering that went array as we both opted for meat. Not something Italy is known for and the main catalyst of all the meals we were disappointed with (OK so this only totals two in the whole week...). I would recommend this restaurant for the atmosphere alone. It is enormous and there are lots of rooms/areas. Make sure you get out in the garden with the lemon trees.

The harbour is gorgeous in Sorrento, but you have to go down 131 steps and navigate a treacherous hairpin bend with traffic coming both ways to access it from town. We think the Grand hotel overlooking the harbour has a lift for their guests, but half the fun is taking your life in your hands! We came down here a couple of times to day trip to Amalfi and Capri. Other than the boats there isn't much to do down here.

One of our favourite restaurants due to both the location and food was La Lanterna Pizzeria in the 'lanes' of the town, where you will also find amazing pasta, limoncello and souvenir shops as well as some designer brands thrown in the mix and of course lots of leather. In La Lanterna and many other restaurants in the area, pasta is billed as a starter. They are also priced like this (you are looking about €6/7 for a pasta dish). We fancied both pizza and pasta and were going to have one of each EACH, instead we sensibly opted for a pizza to share (which incidentally came first) with a pasta dish each. The pizza was amazing...huge, thick and absolutely covered in topping.

Done...

The pasta (green salmon gnocchi and lasagna) were delicious but not as good as the pizza. It could be because we were getting full...the wine was also delish. Red wine at lunch time...good job we could have a snooze in the afternoon.

The final restaurant to talk about in Sorrento is the Sedil Dominova. Again in the lanes this charming little typical Italian first attracted us due to the boats you could sit in outside. There are only four so you have to time it right. The first time we came here (yes we did this one twice, it was our favourite) I can't really remember what I ate (shocking). Potentially there had been many pre-dinner cocktails consumed and poolside beverages enjoyed. I do know however that we had bruschetta...which included the first bit of garlic we had all week. Our interpretation of Italian food must be completely different to what they actually serve. We did not see a bit of garlic bread all week.

Tirimasu, two spoons

The second time we frequented the Sedil Dominova I opted for simple garlic and chili spaghetti. No sauce, just oil. It was however a small portion. It didn't matter however as when we got back to the hotel we called for room service to bring dinner! Pasta pesto and lasagna literally on a silver plate.

Sorrento is also home to some of the best ice cream ever. Gelateria Primavera is the home of the best ice cream in Sorrento. They have so many flavours it was almost impossible to pick between. I opted for three in one...caramel, toblerone and one that I can't remember, must have been a sugar induced black out). Apparently even the pope has been here!

Now we are nearing the end of this marathon post...but I cannot leave you without some food porn. Pasta is my weakness (one of them actually) and I was in carb heaven. They are so beautifully packaged and displayed I wanted to buy them all. I didn't, although I did buy some...

Back at the ranch, this was my haul
Amalfi and Capri posts to come, I will also let you know what I do with this food once I finish dieting. OK so the buffalo mozzarella has gone, well it was going to pass it's best before date...in the meantime; Cheers!

Dating and Dieting

Today children we are learning about the letter D, what begins with D? Dating. What else begins with D? Dieting. Now children...which D's do not go together, you guessed it!

'I am only going to have a gin and slimline tonic' goes right out of the window with the immortal words 'shall we just get a bottle of wine' sigh.

Going to a Black & Blue restaurant for said bottle of wine?! Error!! Ohh the smells. I'll just have a double bison burger extra cheese, pickle and bacon. Fries?

MUST TRY HARDER. Dieting is such a mugs game. I used to mock the girls who ordered a side salad while I was guffawing with my steak and ribs combo. Trust me that will never be me, but I'm on fat fighter fortnight, courtesy of Rosemary Connolly; temptation doth mock me.

Rant over, I will be good for the rest of the week I promise...but as you can see from the above picture, the calories are literally calling my name!

New Do...

The Sorrento sun (which will be posted about very soon) and any other sun for that matter makes my hair go lighter. I don't know what it is but when it's lighter it looks thinner. It's thin enough as it is. So to combat this, I have started to dye it. A good semi at the beginning of the summer lasts throughout, and my hair looks thicker. Win win.

Here is a little before and after...what do you think?
